Key Mechanical Properties to Evaluate

  • Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): Maximum stress the material can withstand.

  • Yield Strength (YS): Stress at which the material begins to deform plastically. Crucial for ensuring the impeller returns to its original shape after load.

  • Elongation & Reduction of Area: Ductility measures. Low ductility can lead to brittle fracture.

  • Fatigue Strength/Endurance Limit: Stress amplitude below which the material will not fail, even after a very high number of cycles (e.g., 10⁷ cycles). This is often the most critical property.

  • Fracture Toughness: Resistance to crack propagation. Important for detecting the effect of inherent flaws.

  • Creep Resistance: For high-temperature applications (e.g., turbochargers, gas turbines), resistance to slow, permanent deformation under constant stress.

  • Hardness: A quick indicator of material strength and wear resistance (relevant for erosive/crosive environments).

 

Typical Test Workflow

  1. Material Certification: Review mill certs for the raw material.

  2. As-Manufactured NDI: Perform PT/UT on the finished impeller.

  3. Dimensional Inspection: CMM scan.

  4. Modal Survey: Identify natural frequencies.

  5. Overspeed Test: The definitive proof test.

  6. Post-Test NDI & Dimensional Check: Look for cracks and permanent growth.

  7. Fatigue Testing (LCF/HCF): On representative samples or prototypes to establish life limits.

  8. Final Reporting & Certification: Compile all data against design and standard requirements.
